[Anti-Dismal] So if people wish to justify having a National Infrastructure Advisory Board let that justification not be based on a false analogue.

[Sweetness & Light] Selected News For Week Jan 17 - Jan 23 | Sweetness & Light: The incoming Obama administration asked Waxman, Rockefeller and others to move the date after the National Telecommunications & Information Administration announced it was putting requests for DTV-to-analog converter box coupons on a waiting list because it had temporarily run out of money to distribute them.

[ScienceBlogs Select] Pharyngula: Sarah Palin: Ignorant and anti-science: To fix the argument, though, I believe all that has to be done is to observe that the evidence strongly suggests that Plain is ignorant of all kinds of fruit fly research and thus would ignorantly condemn all kinds of it as "useless to the public good". Because, if she had heard of genetic research, and thought it not useless, in order to look like she was criticizing it, she would have to have qualified her statement to avoid people taking her for a person who thought such genetic research to be useless.

[Economist's View] Economist's View: Economics "is at Last a Science": Being that you quoted Tucker from the LvMI, you must read or at least peruse their daily articles. Now I know you're not an Austrian (neither am I since I'm not even an economist) but they seem to be quite often right on the mark in a general sense in pointing out...often in real time...the problems we're inviting with our well-intended interventions and large scale programs.

[BBC Blog Network] BBC NEWS | Talk about Newsnight | The James MacTaggart Memorial ...: The role of the Fourth Estate was to audit the relationship between the others, to act as the Court Jester to reveal the hidden truths: it would seen that the Internet has taken on that role, and that the BBC wants to be our new Religion instead. Unfortunately, as Paxman rightly says, it is no better than a bunch of clerical usurers selling Indulgences (or in this case, TV Licences) for hot air, and having lost its way, is particularly ill-placed to preach moral lessons to the rest of us, particularly when we can see this King has no clothes.

[patrick.net] patrick.net » What Credit Crunch?: Princeton is one of the most selective colleges in the United States, admitting only 9.25% of undergraduate applicants in 2008.[26] In September 2006, the university announced that all applicants for the Class of 2012 would be considered in a single pool. In this way, the Early Decision program was effectively ended.[27] In 2001, expanding on earlier reforms, Princeton was the first university to eliminate loans for all students who qualify for aid, .

[Cafferty File] Cafferty File: Tell Jack how you really feel Blog Archive - Ron ...: While a jaded MSM fills the airwaves and lavishes ink on a Dem endorsing a has-been Rep, or a former Prez stumping for his might-have-been wife, front-runner crocodile tears, a dog-mutilating son of a prickly hickster, We the People use the means we can to generate and maintain our enthusiasm for an honest-to-God real man of the People by blogging, commenting, sharing and donating in record numbers that get no news coverage. I suppose that 234 years ago the Times of London or its sister edition in the American colonies had little to say about the Boston Tea Party, but you can be sure that is was the rage of conversation in the coffee houses in every village throughout the land.

[ScienceBlogs Select] Pharyngula: Coyne on the compatibility of science and religion: A virgin birth may not be something for physics to deal with and thus claiming Jesus was the result of a virgin birth does not require physicists, as scientists, to invoke a miracle as the explanation but it does require that physicists who think it was a miracle to demand that biologists do so.

[Roger Ebert's Journal] Roger Ebert's Journal: Archives: of any other persuasion that is offered, but I must find solace and understanding deeply in the heart of the visions and persuasions of Augustine of Dostoevsky, Steinbeck, Aquinas, Tolstoy, Karl Barth, Paul, Peter, John. The best I can sum up is that somehow and someway, in no manner easily elucidated or expressed (the last book of the bible is a genre that is more mysterious and subtle than of which we even have today) this world now is all encompassed and summed up in death and resurrection.

[Cricketdiane's Weblog] The brief version of what I have found about the causes of the ...: Within months of being set-up, the OSP  rivaled both the CIA and the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency, the DIA, as President Bush’s main source of intelligence regarding Iraq’s possible possession of weapons of mass destruction and connection with Al Qaeda.  Hersh explains that the OSP  relied on data gathered by other intelligence agencies and also on information provided by the Iraqi National Congress, or I.N.C., the exile group headed by Ahmad Chalabi.  According to Kampfner, the CIA had ended its funding of the I.N.C.  in the mid-1990s when doubts were cast about Chalabi’s reliability.  Nevertheless  as the administration geared up for conflict with Saddam, Chalabi was welcomed in the inner sanctum of the Pentagon  under the auspices of the OSP, and  Wolfowitz did not see fit to challenge any of Chalabi’s information.  The actions of the OSP have led to accusation of the Bush administration  fixing intelligence to support policy  with the aim of influencing Congress in its use of the War Powers Act.[38]

[Making Light] Making Light: Open thread 40: - Notwithstanding Daniel's comment above, which I believe (but am not certain) applies equally to UK law as it does US, are you aware that the most recent Sexual Offences Act changed the minimum age at which a person can legally appear in pornography from 16 to 18? I strongly suspect it's not an issue for fiction, but it's a change that I feel hasn't been publicised well enough, given that it means that a perfectly legal activity that a large number of people were involved in (posessing certain pornography) has suddenly become illegal.
