Celebrities Watch > James Franco Fills the Hiatus by Texting -- Daily Intel

[Daily Intel] James Franco, actor, creative writing student, and soon-to-be published author, attended last night's National Book Awards at Cipriani downtown, where he spent most of the evening, it appeared, basking in the attention of being the most famous person at the party: He was more recognizable than honoree Gore Vidal, more rakishly handsome than Dave Eggers, and probably richer than anyone else in the room. Franco stayed into the wee hours of the night, smiling his crinkly eyed smile at an evolving locus of giddy publishing women who trotted up to pay their respects, some of whom, as the evening grew drunker, could be seen boldly resting their hands on his famous shoulders.

[Ozy_y2k's Vortex Of Cynicism] ozy_y2k: Milk (2008): There is a little bit of post-death martyrmaking and hagiography going on in this film, to be sure -- I have no doubt that the REAL Harvey Milk was probably a much more complex, and less-saintly, man than Van Sant's movie occasionally makes him out to be -- but it is undisputed that Milk had a resounding and lasting impact upon, if not the national gay subculture which was just then starting to step out of the closet en masse, at least the LOCAL gay culture of the Castro, including his staunch supporter and former boyfriend Smith, his cadre of loyal political organizers and operatives (played by Emile Hirsch, Joseph Cross, Alison Pill, Kelvin Yu, and others), and his mentally-unstable current lover, Jack Lira (Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN's Diego Luna), whose high-strung nature ended in a tragic suicide before Harvey could ever manage to achieve his long-sought-after political goals. Penn is, of course, the heart and soul of MILK, and his political speechmaking and off-the-cuff soapbox stump organizing is as stirring as it is canny;
