[ScienceBlogs Channel : Medicine & Health] Ever since Jenny McCarthy hitched her fading star to the anti-vaccine movement and managed to get Oprah Winfrey to go along for the ride, she has become the public face of the anti-vaccine movement. Unfortunately, there hasn't been nearly as much blowback as there should be in the mainstream press, although bloggers have been all over McCarthy's promotion of the worst lies of the anti-vaccine movement and advocacy of autism quackery.

[ScienceBlogs Channel : Life Science] Bill Maher and "anti-science" : Respectful Insolence: In fact, I'd argue that in one way Maher's antivaccine nonsense and revulsion towards what he sneeringly calls "Western medicine" is even worse than creationism in that it has real, measurable health consequences. Even though I've fairly often written about creationism and the pseudoscience and religious belief trying unsuccessfully to masquerade as science that it is, because I'm a doctor and very much interested in quackery, Maher's health claims bother me even more than creationist nonsense does.

If the vaccine companies are not listening to us, it's their fucking fault that the diseases are coming back.
[Digital Bits Skeptic] In defense of Oprah Winfrey | Digital Bits Skeptic: I’m telling you these facts to show that Oprah herself personally cares about people, and she’s willing to spend major chunks of her time and money to help others. I’m telling you this to make clear what I believe about her personality –
[HealthZone.ca - News & Features] HealthZone.ca: "Asked if Oprah or her show endorses McCarthy's views, a representative for Oprah's program said, `We don't take positions on the opinions of our guests. Rather, we offer a platform for guests to share their first-person stories in an effort to inform the audience and put a human face on topics relevant to them.' When McCarthy's views have been discussed on the air, statements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics saying that there's no scientific evidence of a vaccine-autism link have been read."

[The Skeptical Teacher] Oprah Winfrey Gives Platform to Anti-Vax Movement « The Skeptical ...: In June 2007 Jenny McCarthy began promoting anti-vaccination rhetoric. Because of her celebrity status she has appeared on several television shows and has published multiple books advising parents not to vaccinate their children. This has led to a dramatic increase in the number of vaccine preventable illnesses as well as an increase in the number of vaccine preventable deaths.
[Peer Review on Science Blogs] Jenny McCarthy shows off her knowledge of science : Respectful ...: Jenny then launches into a discourse in which she pits her Google University "education" against actual science, dismissing the genetic basis of autism with a blithe statement that, "contrary to traditional medical wisdom," autism is not genetic, her babbling on and on like a brook about how autism "can't be genetic" because there's no such thing as a "genetic epidemic" reminding me of the babbling bubbles that must be flowing through what passes for her brain. Clearly the concepts of expanding the diagnostic criteria for what is counted as autism and of diagnostic substitution are too much for her fragile eggshell mind.
[The Cranky Conservative] Jenny McCarthy and autism | The Cranky Conservative: I’m a little reluctant to share in Adler’s comments about McCarthy. As the mother of an autistic son, she has had to deal with a lot, and she has done a lot of good in spreading awareness. And some of her detractors are being completely unfair in suggesting that she has used her son has some sort of “cash cow.” I have no doubt that she is motivated by the best of intentions.
